The kunrei system is based on Japanese phonology and more consistent, but it doesn’t reflect the pronunciaton for English/Latin language speakers as accurately.īoth systems are used in Japan: kunrei is officially recognized, but Hepburn is used very often as well in official documents. If you use to kunrei system, the romanization becomes sion, so no ‘h’. This is using the Hepburn romanization, which is easier for English/Latin language speakers. The pronunciation of these characters is しおん: shi-o-n. Shion’s name is written in Japanese as 紫苑, the kanji characters for ‘Aster’.
The difference lies in the romanization systems used to write Japanese words in Latin script. I find this ship fascinating for several reasons: how matter-of-factly it portrays queer romance, how the series refuses readers/viewers closure in regards to that romance, and how the romance itself portrays a fraught and honest dynamic between characters that descend, respectively, from oppressive and oppressed cultures. 6 focuses on the nightmarish foundations and the eventual overthrow of a dystopian society, the relationship between the two boys propels a great deal of the plot and serves as the beating heart of the series. Nezumi and Shion are about as canon a ship as you’ll find anywhere although No. 6 (light novel, anime, and manga: translations of the light novel series available here and you can purchase the translated manga from Kodansha here)
